I have to admit, I have been rather slack in my squirrel observations. However, I did see what appeared to be mating activity of fox squirrels near my house.
I am now an intern until August at the Audubon center in Dallas. I haven't yet seen any squirrels there, but I will try to remember to post if I do.
I will be making a new blog featuring my pets, since that is what is occupying much of my time.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-29205944943263355992012-07-10T01:15:00.001-05:002012-07-10T01:26:45.915-05:00Backpacking in the Pecos WildernessI just got back from a backpacking trip in the Pecos Wilderness in northern New Mexico. I saw my very first marmot, which was most likely a yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris). I also saw some golden-mantled ground squirrels, red squirrels, and Least and Colorado chipmunks.

Pictured below are a golden-mantled ground squirrel and a least chipmunk, two of the most common mammals in the Pecos Wilderness.

One such charity is the Lovely Lita's Sheltering Tree Foundation, located in the Tampa Bay area in Florida. They help raise and rehabilitate baby and injured gray squirrels. Kudos to this rescue group. The link to their website is: Squirrellady.org. You can buy from their store or make a donation, as I have. When I responded to ask where he gets this information, he responds back calling me names and insulting my intelligence. Still no references to the figures of millions of dollars lost.

Now, even if squirrels "damaged" pecan crops, it wouldn't really matter because squirrels and pecan trees have been part of the ecosystem in the US long before man has arrived.

I also tried to tell him about Native Americans and how they make good examples of stewards of the land, particularly the Sioux Indians, since I've read books by a Sioux in regards to environmental stewardship. You know what this moron says in response? Something shockingly idiotic: "The Sioux never seen a pecan tree." Wow. What ignorance some white trash have. Did you know the word "pecan" has Native American origins? Yes, Algonquian to be exact. The Sioux are another tribe, but they have certainly been around pecan trees FAR LONGER than this inbred white trash's ancestors.

As typical of many ultra-conservative tea-baggers, he assumed I was liberal simply because I love animals. Ironically, he was using liberal language in an attempt to describe how liberal he thinks I am.

For some reason, this issue is still bothering me so I thought I'd vent. I have the guy's email address (won't publish it here), but if anyone wants to tell him how ignorant he is, I'd be glad to share it individually.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-24597631985262731312012-02-22T07:56:00.000-06:002012-02-22T07:57:00.733-06:00Russian Scientists Grow Pleistocene-Era Plants From Seeds Buried By Squirrels 30,000 Years AgoSee link:

http://www.popsci.com.au/science/russian-scientists-grow-pleistocene-era-plants-from-seeds-buried-by-squirrels-30-000-years-agoSquirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-7622767239511702022012-02-04T19:19:00.000-06:002012-02-04T19:23:38.140-06:00Eastern Gray SquirrelSquirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-16439699056828750432011-09-17T21:08:00.003-05:002011-09-17T21:16:33.928-05:00Sad News<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 198px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfV4G40Fib0V5uKiOJata84BpiskBOrsr9PzVQ1T3M3YDEAYf8HK5odh2q7IlD3C3v8urI9uYDxgPl786jJY2DBTH6moSevq2VTron1yNFZzbwnXmY5vqtKs_WQozJUs-bMd6hKDehFCw/s320/Scalisti-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653517478075008306" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 297px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivW05dpyi5jek9lJycHipcOV0QZtIRv0QTqZvmGu4fJIPjprlKHO9moBxjw2wwa5dB0AQh0pIThLFCZg2_aAUvN46MlXO-GJ5hXGwkU-sI06Dbbpgo9AXVCMmjiyYujcZtx8BrGNyprEs/s320/Mancha-1+%2528Small%2529.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653517478610192994" />
The last few weeks have been quite sad. Four weeks ago my 10-year old prairie dog Mancha passed away. Then, 6 days ago my 14-year old flying squirrel Scalisti passed away. Some of you who remember me also remember these two. They're both in the rainbow bridge, joining all the other critters who passed. They are buried next to each other. If I was still living in my old place, Scalisti would have been buried next to his mate Orchid, who he proudly sired babies with. I wish I still had those babies, but all the ones that didn't die found new homes. I loved Scalisti and Mancha both; they were so cute and sweet and they will be missed. The picture tributes were made by a member of The Squirrel Board.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-22181531523318233092011-02-23T07:38:00.002-06:002011-02-23T09:55:56.633-06:00Buddee and Elliebelle get releasedYesterday (2/22/11) I released Buddee and Ellibelle. Some people told me how cute they are, but one lady acted as if I was showing her a dead spider. This really insulted me. The ignorance some people have regarding rodents in general is appalling. Even though it was several months ago, I finally decided to call her at work to ask her for an apology. I couldn't confront her in person because I had transferred to a new job location. She said, "If I said anything I didn't mean anything by it." Then she hung up. Not sure if she was sincere or not.

I still have the two, and they have grown.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-22508109755880722892010-12-26T08:13:00.002-06:002010-12-26T08:16:58.427-06:00AdsenseI've decided to put adsense on my blog to see if I'd get anything out of it. Right now, there appears to be links to squirrel exclusion/removal websites, which is certainly not what this blog is about. I guess the adbots or whatever look for certain keywords. As long as they are not links to lethal control of squirrels, I don't have a problem. However, I would like some input on this.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-12529693350826919942010-12-02T23:27:00.002-06:002010-12-02T23:30:48.339-06:00An Interview & UpdatesI just got interviewed about this blog yesterday afternoon by a local radio station (KERA). I wasn't quite prepared, but I did my best in the interview, answering various questions regarding squirrels.

At the moment, the two squirrels I'm raising, Buddee and Elliebelle, are very happy and healthy. They are quite a handful, and I plan on releasing them in my backyard in the spring.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-69856390012200444412010-10-23T11:17:00.004-05:002010-10-24T20:45:04.909-05:00Baby squirrelsIt's been a year since my last post, but now I'm raising two baby squirrels; a male and a female. I'll try to make this blog more active by occasionally posting squirrel-related news articles.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-39241460781226971752009-05-10T12:04:00.001-05:002010-12-03T10:43:55.263-06:00A Chicago Sun-Times article from: scalisti@yahoo.comThe following article from the Chicago Sun-Times has been forwarded to you by scalisti@yahoo.com
If you wish to stop receiving these articles, please contact the sender.
Comments from the sender:
Testing to see if direct email posting works...
To read the full story, click here:
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1558743,w-squirrel-count-notebaert-museum050509.articleSquirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-20303442380003306502008-10-17T20:38:00.005-05:002008-10-17T20:54:50.101-05:00Squirrels at the ZooI have been volunteering at the local zoo since July, working mostly with monkeys. At the zoo is a good population of fox squirrels. Some of them are tame, but I haven't had any come to me for handouts yet. I have attached a video featuring one of these squirrels (and lazy tapirs).
Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952709451489253967.post-63095363208715426572008-10-08T07:28:00.003-05:002008-10-10T12:19:27.968-05:00Defending Squirrels RationallyI want to start off by saying that I accidentally rejected some comments that were posted. There was one post about cooking squirrels that I was trying to delete, but I accidentally deleted all of the ones I selected thinking I was only deleting that one post. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Anyways, I wanted to talk about how I noticed that most of us squirrel enthusiasts are very compassionate people, but we tend to use emotions to defend our little friends. Emotions are part of what makes us human. However, I believe it is also possible to defend squirrels with logic and rationality, in addition to emotion.

When scientists study squirrels in the wild, they appreciate the roles squirrels play in the ecosystem. The more knowledge that is obtained about squirrels, the greater our appreciation of them becomes.

The squirrel haters claim that they have logical reasons to hate squirrels. They also claim that squirrel lovers "feel" too much. The main problem with their arguments is that they become cold and relentless with their reasoning, which robs them of their humanity. While it is okay to show emotions, and perhaps use only emotion, to care for small creatures. But adding sound reasoning skills will improve our ability to confront the squirrel haters who assume that all we do is feel and not think. I believe a good balance between logic and emotion is necessary.Squirrelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13660240450741072117noreply@blogger.com4
